ARCO 2010

For those of you who couldn't attend I wanted to share a quick note with my impressions and finds from the contemporary art fair this year.

Technology has an indisputable influence, both in the process of art creation and as part of the piece itself. Check out artists like Fernando Gutierrez, Boredomresearch (UK) and Daniel Canogar. With his use of computers, led screens, fiber wires and lights the last deserves at least a mention on Wired.

Latvia artist Giant Gabrans makes stunningly colorful pieces using photon painting (painting with lasers). This method has become her signature.

Color obsession
Bright bold colors all over. One of my favorites the simple yet deep and multidimensional paintings by Jose Maria Yturralde (Note: the photos don't do the artwork justice).

Interaction
Artist-technologist Rafael Lozano-Hemmers makes the viewer the subject of his art. With a high def camera he invites us in and turns the audience into pantone pixels.

Me, according to artist

Functional art
Could this be an influence of the frugality trend? Some artists seem to be using old materials and refurbishing them or using art as something else- i.e art as furniture.

Architectural forms
Popular use of lines and geometric forms. On the opposite spectrum the use of florals.

Overall a fantastic display of local and international talent. Keep an eye out for emerging artists from developing countries like Peru and China. The organization was excellent although a bit on the pricier side (student discounts available but catalogues unaffordable). Kudos for cameras allowed.

Thank you for reading.
